Midlands Meander Kwa Zulu/Natal

The Midlands Meander is a craft route off the N3 running from Nottingham Road to Howick.
The range of crafts along the route is astounding and shows the impressive creativity and innovation of South Africans of all races.

Entrance to craft village at Nottingham Road

Piggly Wiggly Country Village

We used the Nottingham Road Hotel as our base and found this old world hotel a little creaky but good value for money and a reflection of a bygone era in South Africa's colonial history.

Mandela Capture Site
Near Howick the Mandela 'capture site' features the unique Mandela steel structure designed by Marco Cianfanelli and erected to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s capture in 1962. The 50 steel columns measuring 32 feet (6,5m) and 29 feet (9m) are each anchored to a concrete base. The shape and form of the sculpture is representative of the leaders 27 years behind bars and the image of Nelson Mandela only becomes visible from a certain angle. The site is near Howick and it also has a small museum and a crafts centre.  Our visit coincided with the death of Mandela making the visit even more poignant.
