In Aboriginal dream-time legend there were three sisters: Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo who lived in the Jameson Valley and were members of the Katoomba tribe.
The girls were beautiful and had fallen in love with three brothers from the Nepean tribe but tribal law prevented a union between them.
The brothers would not accept this law and tried to capture the sisters by force, causing a major battle between the tribes.
As the lives of the 'three sisters' were in danger a witchdoctor from the Katoomba tribe turned them into stone to protect them from any harm. Whilst he intended to reverse the spell when the danger to them had passed the witchdoctor himself was killed in the conflict.
As only he could reverse the spell to return the sisters to their human form the sisters remained in their magnificent rock formation and today present an awesome tourist attraction in the Blue Mountains.
An easy 10 minute walk from Echo Point will take you to the three sisters and a safe but steep climb down steps will give you the opportunity to walk across a bridge into the cave on the side of the first of the three formations.
